Publisher's blurb: For years, Pamela Watson, an Australian corporate strategy consultant, had been living in London with a dream lifestyle and an enviable income, but she had a growing feeling that there must be more to life than the old 9 to 5 (or 8 to 10!). And so, she made the decision to trade desk for dust and embark upon a journey across the African continent. Alone. On a bicycle. Madness.

Cycling for a year and a half, covering nearly 15,000 kilometres and crossing seventeen countries on her route from Dakar on the Atlantic to Dar Es Salaam on the Indian Ocean, she encountered an Africa rarely reported in the media - and experienced first hand the violent tinderbox of local politics. As she braved the roads of Nigeria, she was caught up in the tense days surrounding the country's aborted presidential election; she travelled through Zaire as it struggled to rid itself of Mobutu; and arrived at the Rwanda-Burundi border the day civil war broke out. Through it all, the one thing she came to count on above all others was the warm welcome of the villagers, especially women, she met in some of the tiniest and most remote habitations in the world. Through them, Pamela came to understand another side of Africa: the basic economic needs of women trying to raise cohesive, healthy families in the most discouraging of situations. But what of her own situation? Would she want to return to the grind she had left behind - and, if not, what would she do when the iournev ended?
